Why is it so difficult to quit smoking?

Nicotine reaches the brain in roughly 10 seconds when a person smokes. Nicotine boosts mood and focus, reduces anger and tension, relaxes muscles, and curbs appetite at first.

When the supply of nicotine is reduced, regular dosages of nicotine cause changes in the brain, which lead to nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Smoking alleviates these withdrawal symptoms for a short time, reinforcing the habit. Most smokers become addicted to nicotine through this cycle.
Smoking and anxiety

Some people smoke as a form of self-medication to relieve stress. Smoking, on the other hand, has been demonstrated to enhance anxiety and tension. Nicotine induces a feeling of immediate relaxation, thus individuals smoke in the hopes of reducing tension and anxiety. This sensation will pass quickly.

Withdrawal symptoms and increased cravings are common side effects. Smoking alleviates withdrawal symptoms but does nothing to alleviate anxiety or address the underlying causes.
Depression and smoking
